Mu Chapter members have been very cognizant of community needs and
have contributed to many worthwhile projects through the years. Among these
projects are the following:
FEBRUARY 6, 1967: A Valentine's party was held for the children of the
South Dakota Children's Home at their location on 10th
Street in Sioux Falls.
FEBRUARY, 1968: We held a second Valentine's party for the children of
the South Dakota Children's Home.
FEBRUARY 10, 1969: We entertained the children from the South Dakota
Children's Home at Buffalo Bill's Restaurant for a 6:00 o'clock dinner.
FEBRUARY 9, 1970: The children from the South Dakota Children's Home were
our guests at a 6:00 o'clock dinner at the Pizza Inn.
SEPTEMBER 12, 1972: We began the custom of providing the Retired Teachers
Association with a centerpiece for their monthly meetings. This custom has been
continued each year up through 2003.
OCTOBER 8, 1974: Our new project was a cheer basket which we filled with
fruit and small useful articles and delivered to a nursing home in the city each
month.
FEBRUARY 11, 1974:
We contributed $25 to the Girls' Club of Sioux Falls.
MARCH 11, 1974: We donated
$25 to McCrosson's Boys Ranch for
recreational equipment
SEPTEMBER 13,1976: The
cheer boxes and the retired teacher centerpieces were continued for
this year.
FEBRUARY 13, 1978: A monetary contribution of $150 was divided between
the Public Library of Sioux Falls and RIF (Reading is Fundamental).
May 14, 1979: We
donated $100 to the Children's Inn at their new address: 615 South Grange.
FEBRUARY 9, 1981: We voted to sponsor a person for Girls State at the
cost of $60.
JANUARY 11,1982: We presented an International Delta Kappa Gamma award
book, "A Difference in the Family" to the Sioux Falls Public Library.
SEPTEMBER 13, 1982: We
voted to sponsor a girl at Girls State.
APRIL 11, 1983: Members brought food items for contribution to the Food
Pantry -we also contributed $60 cash.
SEPTEMBER 12, 1983: We
voted to sponsor a candidate for Girls State for the 1983-84 year.
NOVEMBER 1984: We
contributed food items and money to the Food Pantry
DECEMBER 1984: Mu
Chapter members rang the bell for the Salvation Army one Saturday.
1985: We made a contribution to the Ronald McDonald House.
1985: We again sponsored a candidate for Girls State.
September 1986: We
sponsored a candidate for Girls State.
December 1986: We rang the
bell for the Salvation Army.
September 1987: We
voted to again sponsor a candidate for Girls State.
OCTOBER 9, 1989: The
Singing Boys of Sioux Falls received a contribution of $83 for sweaters.
DECEMBER 11, 1989: Members of Mu Chapter contributed caps, gloves,
pencils, mittens, paper, etc. to Bancroft School to be given to needy students.
DECEMBER, 1990: Books were donated to the eight schools represented by
our members to honor the YEAR OF THE LIFETIME READERS.
JOLLY POSTMAN by
Janet Ahlberg was given to Cleveland, Robert Frost, Oscar Howe, JFK, Bancroft,
Lowell, and Garfield.
An art book went to Axtell Park Jr. High.
NOVEMBER 12, 1991: A donation of $2.00 per Mu member was made to the
Singing Boys of Sioux Falls.
July 1992: Mu members delivered MEALS ON WHEELS the last two weeks of the
month.
December 5, 1992: Mu members rang the bell for the Salvation Army
MAY 10, 1993: We started saving aluminum tabs and UPC symbols from Scott
for the Ronald McDonald House.
DECEMBER 1993: Donations were turned in for the Ronald McDonald House.
Mittens, caps, gloves, socks, etc. were contributed for the needy students at
Garfield School.
March 14, 1994: We contributed $30 to the Educationa1 Foundation
DECEMBER 10, 1994: Mittens, caps, and gloves were contributed to Lowell
School for distribution to needy children.
APRIL 1995: We sent $5.00 per Mu Member to Pi Chapter Member LeeAnn Mack,
who needed a bone marrow transplant.
FEBRUARY 1996: Valentine items were sent for the children at the
Children's Home Society (appropriate for ages 8-18 to use).
APRIL 1996: We again
provided gifts for Heartland House.
DECEMBER 1996: Gifts of mittens, caps, scarves, socks, etc. were sent for
needy students at Laura B. Anderson School.
JANUARY 11, 1997: Four Mu members participated as volunteers to serve and
clean up at the annual Holiday Dinner for Tutors and Workers in the Sioux Falls
Area Literacy Program.
JUNE 27-28, 1997: We participated in the "Safe and Caring Environment"
project which involved providing Teddy bears at the State Convention. The bears
and quilts were thereafter donated to the Children's Inn
in September.
1997: We sponsored a RHS girl for Girls State at the cost of $85.00
MARCH, 1997: We sent a letter of support from our chapter to Dr. Keegan,
Sioux Falls Superintendent of Schools, encouraging the continuation of the
Future Problem Solving Team program.
DECEMBER 11, 1997: Needy Gifts of scarves, caps, mittens, socks, etc.
were contributed for children.
1998: We funded two girls, one from LHS and one from RHS, to attend Girls
State in May. 1988 at a cost of $85 each.
DECEMBER, 1998: We showered Heartland House with gifts for their
residents -these were needed household items which they would take with them
when they leave Heartland House.
DECEMBER 1999: We
again provided gifts for Heartland House.
2001: Mu "adopted" a classroom (Roxanne Aronson's) to provide
gifts throughout the year for her little "Treasure Chest" where
children could go to choose a gift as a special reward, and donated $60 for
books as our Christmas project for her room.
1998-2001: Mu contributed $1500 to Washington Pavilion and are proud to
have our name displayed on one of the doors. Theta Chapter also contributed
$1500.
SEPTEMBER, 2001: Mu adopted Cindy Nelson's fifth grade class for this
year's Adopt a Classroom Project. Mu provided a floral arrangement for the
monthly meetings of the Retired Teachers' Association in Sioux Falls, South
Dakota.
NOVEMBER, 2001: Dr. Janet Shelver announced that a member of Delta Kappa
Gamma had anonymously donated an additional $2000 to make the Society’s total
donation to the Washington Pavilion $5000 instead of $3000.
SEPTEMBER, 2002: Susan Roemeling's classroom was chosen for support this
year for Mu Chapter's "Adopt a Classroom” project, to be used with her
reading recovery students and Title I students at Lowell Elementary. In lieu of
giving hostess gifts this year, money donated for the gifts will be used to
place books in the Juvenile Detention Center.
NOVEMBER, 2002: Mu Chapter
supported the refurbishing of Lincoln High School's grand piano, by attending
the Piano and Pasta fund raiser.
DECEMBER, 2003: Mu supported
the Children's Care Hospital and School by attending the Lincoln High School
play The Christmas Carol. $1 of each ticket purchased went to support CCHS.
SEPTEMBER, 2003: Mu
adopted Elizabeth Wood's classes for this year's Adopt a Classroom Project. Mu
is donated paperback books to support "Words for Imprisoned Hearts", a program
to provide books for women prisoners in Pierre, South Dakota. Mu provided floral arrangements for the monthly meetings of the Retired
Teachers' Association in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Mu Chapter volunteered
their time and talents to the Sioux Falls Community in a variety of ways.
OCTOBER, 2004: Mu adopted Karen
Johnson’s and Karen Walker’s ESL classrooms at Lincoln High School. There is a
need for items such as hand lotion and books at the fourth to seventh grade
reading level. Mu Chapter will join with Lutheran Social Services to help
bridge the gap in the mentor program for At Risk children in Sioux Falls. Mu
Chapter will continue to furnish a bouquet of flowers at the Retired Teacher's
Association meetings.
SEPTEMBER, 2005: Mu adopted Karen
Johnson’s and Karen Walker’s ESL classrooms at Lincoln High School. There is a
need for items such as hand lotion and books at the fourth to seventh grade
reading level. Mu Chapter will collect videos for the literacy project in
Mexico. Mu Chapter will continue to furnish a bouquet of flowers at the Retired
Teacher's Association meetings.
SEPTEMBER, 2006: Mu adopted
Glenyta Hanson's class for this year's Adopt a Classroom Project. Mu Chapter
will collect newborn baby items and donate them to Lutheran Social Services. Mu
Chapter will participate in the "Year of the Volunteer" by tracking and
recording their community service volunteer hours in a log book. Mu Chapter will
continue to furnish a bouquet of flowers at the Retired Teacher's Association
meetings.
