Mu Chapter members are truly an excellent example of talented, dedicated, professional, KEY WOMEN TEACHERS, and this is a very incomplete listing of just SOME of their accomplishments, involvements, and recognitions. This is merely a sampling just to give an idea of all that they do in their personal and professional lives.

1965: ALEENE EARLY chaired the Kindergarten Round Table for SDEA. Through the years she has been active as a Cub Scout den mother, with the AAUW book sales, and as a community concert member.

1967-1968: DORIS HUSEBOE was listed in “Who's Who In American Education.”

1968: NORMA IMMEL was elected President of the; Sioux Falls Education Association, a group of approximately 900 voting members, which at that time included all school administrators. This was the last year that an SFEA president was also a full-time teacher. During that year an SFEA office was set up with a half-time secretary and the following year the presidency became a half-time position with a half-day teaching responsibility, and thereafter became a full-time job in itself.

1968: DORIS HUSEBOE was listed in “Outstanding Women Of America”.

1968: CAROL LEITHEISER was chosen as one of the “Outstanding Young Women Of America”.

1968: DORIS HUSEBOE was co-founder of the Sioux Empire Arts Council and was a board member of the council from 1968-1994.

1968: MARILYN LEE was a recipient of an Alpha Pi State Scholarship.

1969: ALEENE EARLY traveled in the Middle East and visited pre-schools.

1969-1970: NORMA IMMEL served on the PR&R Committee for the South Dakota Education Association.

1970: MARILYN LEE served as corresponding secretary of the Sioux Falls Education Association. She has also served on the Sabbatical Leave Committee and the Sick Leave Assistance Committee. 

1970: MARCELLA SCHMIDT was installed as president of the newly organized Sioux Council of International Reading Association.

1970: CAROL ANN HANSEN was chosen by the National Freedom Foundation at Valley Forge to receive the Valley Forge Teachers Medal Award for her personal contribution toward a better understanding of the American Way of Life. She directed her 450 art students at Cleveland School in Sioux Falls in a project titled, "Portrait of a Nation”.

1970: DORIS JOHNSON was a recipient of an Alpha Pi State Scholarship.

1971: MARILYN LEE became president-elect of the newly organized South Dakota State Council of the International Reading Association. She also served as president for the 1979-80 and 1980-81 terms. 

1969 -1972: BEVERLY JOHNSON received a National Science Foundation grant to study mathematics at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. She attended the Regional National Council of Teachers of Mathematics convention in Omaha in 1970 and received her Master’s degree in 1972. She was the Head of the Math Department in Everly, Iowa and Neligh Nebraska from 1965 – 1973 and served as President of the Neligh Teacher’s Association in 1971.

1972: DR. RHONDA R. ANDERSON, as a college student, traveled to Berlin with five students and Professor Peterson from Augustana to study the daily life and culture of the German people. Entering the Communist sector of Berlin required going through Check Point Charlie, the American passage to and from Communist East Berlin at the Berlin Wall. Having passports checked by four different Border patrol, seeing border guards with guns, having a fellow student held for questioning, and having six-foot mirrors slid under the bus, plus guards checking for a false gas tank that might house people who wanted to illegally leave the country, made Rhonda understand the concept of freedom. Dr. Rhonda R. Anderson was a governess for Dr. Kurt Heintges and his family in Duesseldorf, Germany. This opportunity greatly enhanced her spoken German language.

1974: NORMA IMMEL was a recipient of an Alpha Pi State Scholarship.

1974: DR. RHONDA R. ANDERSON studied at the Sprech Institut at the University of Salzburg, Austria She also took three of her German students from Miller, South Dakota on this trip.

1975: ALEENE EARLY traveled in Lebanon, Cairo, Zurich and Israel.

1975: MARILYN LEE was installed as President of Falls Unit No. 15 of the American Legion Auxiliary.

1975: DR. RHONDA R. ANDERSON received her South Dakota Real Estate License and sold real estate for ten years.

1970s: LORRAINE CLEVEN served the South Dakota Business Educators as vice-president, secretary, and publicity at different times.

1975: CAROL LEITHEISER was chosen as one of the Outstanding Elementary Teachers Of America.

1976-1982: DORIS HUSEBOE was on the Guthrie Theater Board of Directors, Minneapolis, MN, was co- chair of the regional development committee 1979-1982, and served on the executive committee 1979-1982.

1976: GLENYTA HANSON and MARY ANN HOFER were recipients of the Alpha Pi State Scholarship.

1976: DORIS HUSEBOE was the Faculty-Administrator of the Year of Augustana College.

1976-1979: DR. RHONDA R. ANDERSON's German students at Washington High School received the highest scrores in the state of South Dakota on the National Council of Teachers of German exam for three years in a row. Her students were awarded free trips to Germany.

1977-1979: DR JANET SHELVER was the President of ALPHA PI STATE!

1978: DENISE HINDERS was a recipient of the Alpha Pi Scholarship.

1978: CAROL ANN HANSEN became the Art Coordinator for the Elementary Grades in the Sioux Falls Public School System.

1979-1980: DR RHONDA ANDERSON was the first teacher in the Sioux Falls School System to receive a Fulbright Teacher Exchange through Washington, D.C. She taught and studied in Germany for a year.

1979-1985: DR DORIS HUSEBOE was on the Sioux Falls Community Playhouse Board of Directors.

1980: CAROL ANN HANSEN was the recipient of the Annie Talent Award.

1980-1986: BEVERLY JOHNSON took a sabbatical leave from teaching in 1980 and studied Computer Science at Augustana College. In subsequent years she accumulated over 60 hours in Computer Science.

1980: DORIS HUSEBOE was WCCO Radio 's "Good Neighbor" on March2 9.

1980: PHYLLIS HOISETH was nominated for the YWCA Leadership Award for l981.

1981: DR. JANET SHELVER was awarded the Alpha Pi State Achievement Award.

1982: PAT LEWIS received Mu Chapter Scholarship Award as she completed her Master's degree.

1982-1986: BEVERLY JOHNSON was a part-time computer-programming instructor at National College of Business.

1983-1999: DR. RHONDA ANDERSON served on the Fulbright Exchange Board and was the Regional Chairperson of the Fulbright Exchange Program for South Dakota from 1983-1988.

1985: CAROL ANN HANSEN was our representative for the Leadership Luncheon at the YWCA.

1985: SUE SCRIBNER was presented a Mu Chapter Scholarship Award as she completed her Master's degree.

1985: DORIS HUSEBOE, Director of Student Activities for Augustana College, was granted an ED.D. in Adult and Higher Education Administration from the University of South Dakota.

1985: DR. RHONDA R. ANDERSON received her Master of Arts in Education Degree from South Dakota State University majoring in Guidance Counseling and Personnel Services. Rhonda volunteered as a counselor at Lutheran Social Services, the Juvenile Detention Center, and Luther Manor from 1984 - 1987.

1986-1995: BEVERLY JOHNSON served on the Sioux Falls School District’s Computer Planning Committee/Technology Design Group.

FEBRUARY 1986: GLORIA DAMGAARD, instructor in the Department of Nursing at Augustana College, was honored as "Citizen of the Month".

1986: MARCELLA SCHMIDT was a member of the Advisory Board for the Center for Elder Health & Enrichment sponsored by the Sioux Valley Hospital.

1986: JOELLEN KOERNER was a member of the South Dakota team in the Midwest Alliance in Nursing Project to develop a consensus on the Baccalaureate Nursing Competencies. 

1986: SUE SCRIBNER received a Master of Arts Degree in Adult and Higher Education from the University of South Dakota.

1986-1987: BEVERLY JOHNSON conducted Logo computer workshops for Augustana College’s summer program for gifted elementary students. This program was sponsored by the YWCA.

1987: The State School Administrators named DR MAIZIE SOLEM “The Outstanding Curriculum Specialist”.

1987: PHYLLIS HOISETH was the recipient of the Distinguished Service and Music Award given by the South Dakota High School Activities Association at the 34th Annual Concert of All State Chorus and Orchestra in Rapid City.

1987: LOELLA ROSE resigned as treasurer for Mu Chapter after serving in that Office for ten years!

1987: DR. RHONDA ANDERSON was a Carnegie Mellon Grant recipient.

1987-1991: DR DORIS HUSEBOE was a member of The Minnesota Public Radio Board of Directors.

1989: CAROL ANN HANSEN was the South Dakota Art Educator of the Year.

1989: MARY HELEN SCHMIDT was the first female in South Dakota to be awarded a Master Teacher Certificate in Piano.

1989: BEVERLY JOHNSON was a member of the Central Committee and the Chairman of the Community and School Committee for the North Central Evaluation Team at Washington High School. She participated in the North Central Evaluations at Neligh Nebraska. 

1989: MARILYN LEE was nominated for Teacher of the Year in the Vern Eide Motor Car Competition.

1990-1992: DR JANET SHELVER was PRESIDENT of DELTA KAPPA GAMMA SOCIETY INTERNATIONAL!!

1990-: MARY ANN HOFER was the recipient of the SALLY Award. SALLY stands for the Sweet Adeline Leading Lady of the Year.

1990: CAROL ANN HANSEN received the National Art Education Association Award as the South Dakota Art Educator for 1989. The award is given to art educators who exhibit outstanding accomplishments and exemplary service.

1990: JOELLEN KOERNER was honored as one of the 100 nurses who were invited to the White House by First Lady Barbara Bush.

1990: DR. RHONDA R. ANDERSON received her Master of Science degree in counseling and Human Resource Development from South Dakota State University. From 1989 - 1991 Rhonda was a therapist at USD Counseling Center during her sabbatical leave and also was a supervisor of Master's practicum counseling students. During this time she also was a supervisor of Sioux Falls area student teachers for USD.

1990: BEVERLY JOHNSON attended the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Western Regional Conference in Hawaii and also served as a member of the Sioux Falls School District’s Curriculum Council.

1990: ESTHER (CHRIS) CHRISTENSEN was nominated for the Sioux Falls Outstanding Volunteer Award.

1990: DEBRA HANSON was the recipient of the Florence Krieger/Adeline Jenny Scholarship.

1990: LORRAINE CLEVEN was the Instructor of the Year by the American Institute of Banking. While at Southeast Technical Institute, Lorraine was instrumental in helping develop the first office systems banking classes at SETI. While teaching at Lincoln High School she was selected as the only South Dakota instructor to attend a Utah seminar that taught her how to develop the first office simulation program for a secretarial career block at Lincoln High.

1991: BEVERLY JOHNSON was nominated for the Teacher of the Year competition sponsored by Vern Eide, Inc. and the school district. She also attended the National Computer Equity Convention in California and is a certified Gender Equity Trainer. Beverly served on South Dakota’s Equity Advisory Council from 1992-1993.

1991: RUTH GERTNER was a nominee for the Sioux Falls Teacher of the Year.

1991-1992: DR. RHONDA R. ANDERSON was a part-time therapist at McKennan Hospital.

1991: BEVERLY JOHNSON participated in IBM’s Classroom Networking Implementation District Coordinator Class in Atlanta, Georgia, after which she served as the Computer Systems Operator and Computer Coordinator for Roosevelt High School from 1991-1995. She also was the Computer Coordinator for Washington High School from 1985- 1990. 

1992 to present (2002): DR DORIS HUSEBOE has been a member of the Sioux Falls Master Singers Board!

1992: CAROL LEITHEISER was a “KDLT Teacher Who Makes a Difference.” She was also a finalist for the Sioux Falls Teacher of the Year Award in the Vern Eide Motor Car Competition.

1993: ELIZABETH WOOD took students abroad to Europe for the second time -she had also taken a group there in 1991.

1993-1994: BEVERLY JOHNSON served on the Communication Development Study Committee.

1993: DR. DORIS HUSEBOE was recognized as one of 16 women among 100 Influential South Dakotans in a statewide survey by “EYES ON YOU” magazine. From December 1993 to April 1993 she was Interim Executive Director of the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra and from September 1994 to July 1997, she served as the Director of Development (volunteer) for the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra.

1993: DR. JANET SHELVER was awarded the Delta Kappa Gamma International Achievement Award.

1993: BEVERLY JOHNSON was a guest speaker at the Women’s Day Conference at Dakota State University. Her topic was gender equity in math, science, and computer science. 

1994: DORIS JOHNSON was awarded an honorary Doctor ‘s degree from the University of Sioux Falls. She was also awarded the Leadership Award in Education that same year.

1994-2004: DR. RHONDA R. ANDERSON was a part-time instructor at National American University, teaching Composition, Advanced Composition, Human Relations, Psychology, Organizational Behavior, and Professional Development. Rhonda has been nominated for Teacher of the Quarter several times at NAU.

1995: MARILYN LEE was awarded the Alpha Pi State Achievement Award.

1995-1997: DR. RHONDA R. ANDERSON was Co-Chair of the Transition Committee for the North Central Association outcome-based evaluation. In 1996 Rhonda present the faculty in-service training on "Student and Teacher Relations". Rhonda was secretary for Lincoln High School's Site Counsel from 1995-1997.

1996: CAROL LEITHEISER was named as one of the “Who's Who Among America’s Teachers.”

1996: BEVERLY JOHNSON was a participant in the “Connecting Educators to the Workplace Program.”

1996 -2002: DR DORIS HUSEBOE has served on the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, President's Advisory Committee on the Arts.

1996: DR DORIS JOHNSON received the Education Honor Roll Award for Outstanding Service in the Field of Education by the University of Sioux Falls.

1997-1999: DR DORIS HUSEBOE was the volunteer Campaign Director for the Washington Pavilion Capital Campaign Phase II when $1.5 million was raised. In 1998 Doris was also a recipient of the Sioux Empire United Way David 5: Birkeland Memorial Community Leadership Award.

1997: RHONDA ANDERSON earned her Doctorate in Counseling and Psychology.

1998 to present (2002): DR DORIS HUSEBOE has chaired The Northern Plains Tribal Arts Fundraising Committee.

1998: DR. RHONDA R. ANDERSON's doctoral dissertation was used in the 1997-1998 accreditation process of National American University. In 1998, Rhonda also received an International Who's Who among Professional Business Women Award.  DR. RHONDA ANDERSON was named in “Who's Who Among America's Teachers” for the post-secondary level of education.

1998-2002: DR. RHONDA ANDERSON was a member of Augustana's Teacher Education Committee for Accreditation, representing secondary education in Sioux Falls.

1999: ELZABETH POPE attended a Readers Theater seminar in London, England, with her family, where they saw 17 plays in 19 days.

1999: DR DORIS HUSEBOE was the recipient of the Cosmopolitan Club of Sioux Falls' Distinguished Service Award.

1999: BEVERLY JOHNSON designed a web site for her church and in 2003 designed a web site for Mu Chapter.

1999-2001: PHYLLIS SCHRAG was SFEA Secretary. In her busy schedule she also provided quilting shows on OWL- TV; has been a volunteer host for fund raising on South Dakota Public TV; hosted a NABS student from India, and provided programs of instruction or entertainment for many groups with her singing and acting and been a choir member of First Baptist Church, among her many activities.

1999-2003: DR. RHONDA ANDERSON taught the ACT preparation course for Community Education. Rhonda received "A Teacher Who Makes a Difference Award" from Community Education in 2003.

2000: CAROL LEITHEISER helped with the publicity for the first Lowell Schoo1 cookbook, which was a fundraiser project for the PTA. She was awarded the Lowell Lifetime PTA Membership.

2000: DR RHONDA ANDERSON was named to “WHO'S WHO AMONG AMERICA'S TEACHERS, 2000”, for the secondary level of education.

2000: ROXANNE ARONSON was presented the Janet Shelver Travel/Study Scholarship in the amount of $750, which enabled her to travel to England on a 24-day trip, which provided her with volumes of historical information about authors and books.

2000: ELIZABETH WOOD was runner-up Teacher of the Year in the Vern Eide Motor Cars Award.

2000-2003: DR. RHONDA R. ANDERSON was the Research Chairman of Lincoln High School's North Central Association Committee.

2001: PHYLLIS SCHRAG was chosen as the first South Dakota recipient of the NEA Foundation's Annual "Teacher of Excellence Award". She traveled to Washington D.C. in December, where she ranked seventh in the nation!

2001-2003: ELIZABETH WOOD was the ALPHA PI STATE PRESIDENT!

2001: CYNTHIA NELSON was one of five South Dakota teachers who earned National Board Certification.

2001: DR. RHONDA R. ANDERSON was installed as Corresponding Secretary of Alpha Pi State.

2001: DR. DORIS HUSEBOE was inducted into the South Dakota Hal of Fame .for her tireless involvement in the arts and humanities in our state. She also received the Sioux Falls Mayor's Award in the Arts.

2001-2002: CYNTHIA NELSON was one of 600 teachers selected by the Fulbright Memorial Fund teacher program to spend three weeks in Japan during the summer. She spent part of that time with a smaller group of 20 educators in Iwamizawa, Hokkaido, Japan, one of Japan's nine islands.

August 2002: Five Mu Chapter members attended the International Convention of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society in Little Rock, Arkansas: DR. JANET SHELVER, ELIZABETH WOOD, MARILYN LEE, DR. RHONDA ANDERSON; and BEVERLY JOHNSON. They also assisted in hosting a reception to mark the 10th Anniversary of Dr. Shelver's biennium as the International President of the Society.

2002: MARILYN LEE served her 26th year as Editor of the Alpha Pi Newsletter.

2002-2004: ELIZABETH WOOD served on the Delta Kappa Gamma International Personal Growth and Services Committee.

2002-2004: DR. RHONDA ANDERSON was a part-time instructor at Colorado Technical University, teaching Psychology and Organizational Behavior.

2002: JORENE LARSON has enjoyed practicing yoga at the Sioux Valley Wellness Center for twenty years.

2003: DR. RHONDA R. ANDERSON became a Fulbright Life Member. Rhonda was installed as First Vice President of Alpha Pi State. Rhonda was a presenter and facilitator at the Alpha Pi State Regional Convention in Bismarck, North Dakota and participated in the Leadership Training held in August at Chamberlain, South Dakota.

2001–2003: BEVERLY JOHNSON volunteered as a computer instructor at the Center for Active Generations and assume the duties of President of the local SeniorNet organization in July of 2003. SeniorNet is an organization, which helps seniors learn about computer technology. Beverly volunteers at the Washington Pavilion and serves as church council clerk. She also published an article in the SeniorNet Newsline paper entitled, a national publication, which focuses on computer technology for seniors 55 and older. 

2001-2004: DR. RHONDA ANDERSON was advisor of Master's Thesis for the University of Sioux Falls. Rhonda was also listed in Who's Who among America's Teachers, 2004 for the high school level of instruction.


In Mu Chapter we have two members who have had extraordinary experiences and honors. We cannot attempt to do more than highlight some of their accomplishments with a brief resume for each.

 


 

MAE ARLENE (MAIZIE) ROGNESS SOLEM, Ed.D.

Education includes University of South Dakota, Vermillion, SD, Ed.D., 1973-76; University of California, 1978.

Her many teaching experiences include: 

  • English, Music, History at LeMars High School in LeMars, IA
  • English, Library at Central High School in Madison, SD
  • All 7th grade subjects and music and all 8th grade subjects and music at the International Children’s Centre, Bangkok, Thailand
  • Various teaching experiences in Grade 1 through high school in Fairfax, VA
  • Reading Clinic Director summers and 5th grade Master Teacher, Maxwell Air Force Base School in Alabama
  • Director/Teacher, Supervisor of District Remedial Reading Teachers in Fairborn, OH
  • Title I Resource Teacher, Primary Curriculum Coordinator, and K-12 Curriculum Supervisor in Sioux Falls, SD
  • Conducted workshops and/or taught courses for South Dakota State University, Augustana College, and the University of Sioux Falls
  • In 1959-1962 she was working with the Speaker’s Bureau, United States Embassy in London England, where she was responsible for all assignements relating to the education in the United States.

The many honors Maizie has received and publications she has had include: 

  • Disseratation: A Comparative Study of Five Alternative Reading Programs and Learning Profiles of Disabled Readers in December 1976
  • Certified as a Reading Specialist, Elementary Principle, Elementary and Secondary Teacher
  • Published an article in KAPPAN entitled “Junior First Grade, A Year to Get Ready” in December 1981
  • She is listed in:

  • Wrote the handbook for Teacher Aides in the summer of 1973
  • Recipient of Governor Janklow’s Award for Volunteer of the Year in Education in 1983
  • YWCA Leader Luncheon Award in the Field of Professions in 1984
  • Distinguished Alumni Award at Augustana College in 1986
  • International Reading Association Literacy Award for 1987
  • Outstanding Administrator’s Award, SDASCD, SASD, 1986-87

Maizie is a member of many professional organizations and her participation in those organizations include:

  • Association for Supervision and curriculum Development (SDASCD) President‑Elect (1975-76), President (1976-78)
  • Board of Directors of national ASCD (1977-79)
  • Member of National Selection Committee (1977-78)
  • State Right to Read Advisory Board (1975-81)
  • State Right to Read Task Force to Write Standards of Excellence in Reading for SD (1975-78)
  • IRA, Sioux Council, Chariman, Reasearch and Editor of Newsletter (1979-80, 1984-85)
  • Elected to a three-year term on the thirteen member Executive Council of ASCD, the governing body of this 45,000 member professional education association (1979-82)
  • Conducted numerous workshops in SD school districts on the subjects of math, reading, curriculum, instruction, the use of teacher aides, and supervision (1971‑81)
  • IDEA Fellow, 1982

Maizie has conducted many workshops, spoken at numerous meetings, and made presentations to a wide variety of groups, both professional and in community service. She has been actively involved by serving on boards, committees, and as an officer of the groups.

A few of these workshops and presentations inc1ude:

  • Participated in a workshop training scoring leaders in holistic and analytical scoring of essays and paragraphs for the 9th and 12th grades criteria-referenced Language Arts test, 1984
  • Participated in a workshop to train teachers to score essays and paragraphs both, holistically and analytically, May-June, 1984, 1985, 1986
  • Participated as a member of the State Evaluation Committee for SID - Summer in Depth grants, 5 years
  • Made a presentation on "Junior First Grade," at the National Conference of the Educational Leadership Council of America in Pittsburgh, PA in 1985
  • Was Education Coordinator for the SD Centennial Celebration, Minnehaha County 1987-88-89
  • Conducted a tour of 16 educators to China for 3 weeks, visiting universities, secondary and elementary schools, including kindergarten and nursery schools in seven cities in the summer, 1985
  • Community service groups include La Sertoma, Augustana College groups, Zonta International DAR Foundation, RSVR (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) and First Lutheran Church

Maizie’s special interests are painting, reading, and gardening. She won First Place and Best-in-Show with an oil painting entitled “The Lost City” in a city-wide art show in Fairborn, Ohio in 1970

Janet has national certification as a counselor, career counselor, and school psychologist; licensure in Minnesota as a school psychologist, counselor, supervisor of school psychologists, and director of guidance counselors; certification in South Dakota as a guidance counselor, psychologist, speech therapist, school administrator, and teacher.

Activities in Delta Kappa Gamma Society International include the following.

  • 1990-1994:      Trustee of The Delta Kappa Gamma Educational Foundation
  • 1990-1992:      International President and Chairman of the International Administrative Executive Boards.
  • 1988-1990:      International Second Vice President
  • 1988–1990:    Appointed by the International President to assume duties of the Northwest Regional Director due to ill health of the Director
  • 1988:               A continuing member of the International Executive Board as a past president of the society
  • 1988- 1990      Assumed the duties of the Northwest Regional Director at the request of the international president, due to ill health of the elected director

Janet has attended all international conventions since 1972 with the exception of the Portland Convention in 1971, while she was working on her doctorate at Northern Illinois University. She has attended all Northwest Regional Conferences since 1971. In addition, she has attended seven regional conferences of the Northeast, Southeast, and Southwest, Among places her positions in Delta Kappa Gamma have taken Janet as speaker are British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan, Puerto Rico, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, California, Rhode Island; Massachusetts, Indiana, West Virginia, North Carolina, Minnesota, Idaho, Iowa, North Dakota, Wyoming, Georgia, Wisconsin, Arizona, Georgia, Oregon, Texas, Kentucky, Missouri, California, Ohio, and Iceland

Among Janet 's accomplishments while she was Alpha Pi State President was the chartering in1978 of the Rho and Pi Chapters in South Dakota, with the South Dakota Membership topping 1000. A special event as International President was the chartering of the Germany State Organization in 1991, in Frankfurt, Germany, chartering the Alpha and Beta Chapters in Berlin and Frankfurt, an expansion that included three meetings in Germany during 1991. Janet was also responsible for planning and presiding at the International Convention of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1991.

Many other honors and awards presented to Janet include:

  • 2002: "Spirit of Soroptimism Award" presented at the North Central Regional Convention, Fargo, ND 2000: Inducted into the "Green Angels ", a newly chartered group of the Girl Scouts of America. Janet has a lifetime adult membership in the Girl Scouts of America.
  • 1988-1990: Governor of the North Central Region (MN; IA, ND, SD, NE) of the Soroptimist International - Federation of the Americas
  • 1982-1984: (And also 1976-1977) Chapter President of Soroptimist International, Sioux Falls, South Dakota
  • 1980-1981: First woman to serve as chapter president of Phi Delta Kappa in Sioux Falls
  • 1979: Was presented with a plaque from the Midwest Region of the American Personnel and Guidance Association for "Three Years of Distinguished Service in the APGA Senate” presented at the APGA Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada.
  • 1978: Was presented the "W. Marvin Kemp Award" from the South Dakota Personnel and Guidance Association for outstanding contributions to the state in the field of guidance
  • 1975-1978: President of Toastmistress International Patrician Club, Sioux Falls
  • 1973-1975: First woman to serve as President of the South Dakota Personnel and Guidance Association 1972: Received "Outstanding Elementary Counselor Award" from the SD Personnel and Guidance Association

Janet's varied employment experiences include:

  • Luverne, MN school psychologist, preschool through Grade 12
  • Teaching extension courses for Worthington Junior College, Psychologist for the SW Area Educational Cooperative Service Unit in Minnesota (5 school districts), trained 17 high school counselors to present summer workshops for disadvantaged youth in 14 sites throughout the State of South Dakota for an Area Summer Youth Program in decision making, self- assessment and career exploration
  • Worked as private consultant
  • Director of Career Education for the SD State Department of Education, Pierre, SD
  • 1976-1979. Invited to Washington, D.C. for one week each year by the National Department of Education as a reader of proposals for Career Education for federal grants.
  • 1962-1976. Employed by the Sioux Falls School District as a teacher of kindergarten, summer Headstart programs, elementary counselor, coordinator for elementary career education and director of a post-high EPDA Project, federally funded for development of individualized instruction, SE Area Vocational Technical School (an open entry/open exit program).

To round out her many activities, Janet finds time to do volunteer service including at the Washington Pavilion of Arts and Science and at Our Savior's Lutheran Church.
